Strasbourg papyrus (fragments of On Nature, book I)
P. Strasb. gr. Inv. 1665–1666
Remains of a papyrus roll from Panopolis (Akhmim, Egypt), acquired in 1904 by the Strasbourg library and reused in antiquity, according to its editors, for a funerary ornament. Its fragments—52, according to the editors—fall into several ensembles; the main one (a) contains lines 233–300 of the first book, identified by a stichometric mark (the letter gamma, 300), and connects with fragment B17. Besides new details of the cosmic cycle and zoogony, it includes first-person lines on the "pitiless day" on which the crime of eating flesh was committed, forcing a rethinking of the separation between the two poems.

Authorship note
An ancient copy of authentic lines by Empedocles, made in the late first century CE. Identified by Alain Martin in 1994 and published with Oliver Primavesi in 1999. It is the only direct witness to his work not transmitted through quotations.
