Empedocles
The Sphere (spurious)
Traditional attribution
The Sphere (spurious)
Σφαῖρα

A short didactic poem on the celestial sphere and the constellations, unrelated to Empedocles' physics. Its attribution is explained by the prestige of the Empedoclean Sphere and the habit of placing school texts under ancient names.

Authorship note
Groundless attribution. An astronomical poem that some Byzantine manuscripts ascribe to Empedocles; its language and metre betray it as a very late work. It was edited in 1898 among the astronomical texts of imperial and Byzantine date.
