Republic (Politeia)
Πολιτεία

A political treatise known only from testimonies, chiefly Philodemus and Diogenes Laertius (VI 72–73). It proposed a community without marriage—the free union of the man who persuades with the woman who consents—with children held in common, knucklebones instead of coinage, indifference to dietary and religious taboos, cannibalism included, and the idea that the only right constitution is that of the cosmos. It inspired the Republic of Zeno of Citium, written according to tradition "on the dog's tail", and stands at the origin of ancient cosmopolitanism.

Authorship note
A lost work whose authenticity has been disputed since antiquity. It appears in Diogenes Laertius' list (VI 80) but not in Sotion's; some later Stoics, uneasy with its content, declared it spurious. Philodemus of Gadara (On the Stoics, PHerc. 155 and 339) replied that Cleanthes and Chrysippus quoted it as Diogenes' work, and most present-day specialists (Dorandi, Schofield, Goulet-Cazé) regard it as genuine.
