Baruch Spinoza
Apology for leaving the synagogue (lost)
Traditional attribution
Apology for leaving the synagogue (lost)
Apología (en español)

A defence which, according to Bayle, he addressed to the Amsterdam rabbis after the herem of 1656. Colerus adds that he replied in writing, in Spanish, to the sentence. If it existed, it would be Spinoza's first writing and the antecedent of his biblical criticism. No copy survives.

Authorship note
A lost work whose existence is known only through third parties: Pierre Bayle (1697) states that Spinoza wrote in Spanish an apology for his leaving the synagogue containing ideas later included in the Theological-Political Treatise; Colerus could find no trace of it. Existence probable but unverified.
