B. d. S. Opera posthuma / De nagelate schriften van B. d. S.

Retrato anónimo de Spinoza (Wolfenbüttel)
byBaruch Spinoza

The volume that made most of his work known: the Ethics, the Political Treatise, the Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect, a selection of the correspondence and, in the Latin edition only, the Compendium of Hebrew Grammar. Its preface presents the author as a seeker of truth and of salvation through reason. The edition was made quickly and discreetly to avoid confiscation of the manuscripts.

Authorship note

A posthumous edition secretly prepared by his friends—Jarig Jelles, author of the preface, Lodewijk Meyer, Georg Hermann Schuller, Johannes Bouwmeester—and printed by Jan Rieuwertsz without naming author, editor or place; the Dutch version, De nagelate schriften, was largely translated by Jan Hendriksz Glazemaker. Banned by the States of Holland in 1678.
