Beat Zen, Square Zen, and Zen
Essay first published in Chicago Review (1958) and then as a City Lights pamphlet. It distinguishes the 'beat Zen' of Kerouac and the Beat Generation, which used Zen to justify rebellion, from the 'square Zen' of institutional orthodoxy, and argues that genuine Zen needs neither. It was later collected in This Is It.
