Ἀποσπάσματα

A modern collection (Schenkl, 1916) of some thirty fragments and several dozen doubtful ones. Notable are Gellius' fragment about the philosopher frightened in a storm, which justifies instinctive fear by distinguishing it from assent (fr. 9), and the maxim "bear and forbear" (anechou kai apechou) transmitted by Gellius from Favorinus. Schenkl's fragments 8, 9 and 14 are considered especially valuable in completing the doctrine of the Discourses.
Authorship note
Quotations of Epictetus preserved by other authors. Some come from the lost books of the Discourses (Gellius XIX.1 quotes Book V; Marcus Aurelius XI.33–39); many others, transmitted in anthologies such as Stobaeus', are of doubtful authenticity or belong to other authors.
