Avadhūta Upaniṣad

अवधूतोपनिषत् (Avadhūtopaniṣad)

Dattātreya, cromolitografía de la Ravi Varma Press
byDattatreya

Sāṅkṛti asks who the avadhūta is, what his state and conduct are. Dattātreya answers by explaining the name through its syllables (the imperishable, the excellent, the one who has shaken off bonds, the one who is "that") and describes the one who has left castes and stages of life behind, lives in himself, clothed or naked, and makes his body his only altar. It takes up expressions from the Taittirīya Upaniṣad and other Vedic scriptures.
