Uddālaka's debates in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa

शतपथब्राह्मण XI.4.1, XI.5.3 (Uddālaka Āruṇi)

Manuscrito de la Chāndogya Upaniṣad (1849)
byUddalaka Aruni

In XI.4.1 Uddālaka travels through the northern country as an officiant with a gold coin to challenge his colleagues; Svaidāyana Śaunaka wins the disputation with questions about the new- and full-moon sacrifices, and Uddālaka returns to him with firewood in hand to be instructed. In XI.5.3 Śauceya Prācīnayogya questions him about the agnihotra — the cow, the calf, the milk, the fire — and about the expiations when the fires go out, and Uddālaka answers everything.

Authorship note

Passages of the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa, a collective work of the Vājasaneyin school, in which Uddālaka takes part as priest and disputant. There is a parallel of the first in the Gopatha Brāhmaṇa (1.3.6).
