The doctrine of the five fires (pañcāgni-vidyā), received from Pravāhaṇa Jaivali
पञ्चाग्निविद्या (Chāndogya 5.3–10; Bṛhadāraṇyaka 6.2)

To answer the five questions the king had put to Śvetaketu, Pravāhaṇa teaches that the other world, the rain cloud, the earth, man and woman are five fires in which what becomes a new human being is successively offered, and describes the two paths of the dead: that of the gods, from which there is no return, and that of the ancestors, which leads back to earth. It is one of the first expositions of rebirth in Indian literature.

Authorship note
A teaching the text attributes to King Pravāhaṇa Jaivali, which Uddālaka (here called Gautama) receives as a pupil; it is included because its transmission passes through him.
