Response to a Spiritual Challenge

Respuesta a un desafío espiritual

Retrato de Santa Teresa de Jesús por fray Juan de la Miseria (1576)
byTeresa of Ávila

A spiritual game in the form of a chivalric tournament 'turned to the divine'. Faced with a challenge of penances sent from Pastrana, Teresa and her nuns, many of them ill, reply by offering simple virtues: patience, humility, fraternal charity. It shows the humour with which Teresa formed her communities and her wariness of ascetic competition.

Authorship note

A communal piece: the challenge 'poster' came from Pastrana (probably with Jerónimo Gracián's involvement) and the nuns of the Incarnation in Ávila, where Teresa was prioress, answered it under her direction. The autograph is lost except for a fragment kept at the Carmel of Guadalajara; the title is late. Vicente de la Fuente dates it to 1572.
