Lysis
Plato
In a newly opened wrestling school, Socrates talks with the boys Lysis and Menexenus about friendship (philia): is the friend the one who loves, the one loved, the like, the unlike? The idea of a 'first friend' for whose sake all else is loved appears, anticipating the Symposium. The dialogue ends without an answer, with the affectionate jibe that they think themselves friends without knowing what that is.
