What Then Must We Do?

Leo Tolstoy

Treatise born of Tolstoy's part in the 1882 Moscow census, when he saw at close quarters the misery of the slums. It concludes that the charity of the rich is useless while they live on the labour of others, and proposes that each should live by his own manual work. Written 1882–1886, its final chapters were banned in Russia.
