Kholstomer (Strider)

Leo Tolstoy

Story largely narrated by an old piebald horse, Kholstomer, who tells the herd his life: his spotted birth, gelding, masters and old age. Seen through his eyes, human property — saying "my horse", "my land" — appears an absurd convention. Begun in 1863 and finished in 1885, published in 1886. A famous example of "estrangement" according to Viktor Shklovsky.
