White Nights

Fyodor Dostoevsky

'A Sentimental Novel (From the Memoirs of a Dreamer)': over four white nights in St Petersburg a lonely young man who lives on daydreams meets Nastenka, who is waiting for her lover's return. He falls in love with her while helping her, and when the other man returns he is left only with gratitude for 'a whole moment of happiness'. It is his most widely read story and was filmed by Visconti and Bresson.
