Mahābhārata
महाभारत (Mahābhārata)

The longest epic in world literature, a 'collection of a hundred thousand stanzas' in eighteen books, with the Harivaṃśa as a supplement. It narrates the rivalry between the Kauravas and their cousins the Pāṇḍavas for the kingdom of Hastināpura, the dice game, the exile and the eighteen-day war at Kurukṣetra, with its aftermath. It includes the Bhagavad Gītā and numerous tales and treatises on dharma, politics and liberation, and regards itself as a 'fifth Veda'.

Authorship note
The poem presents itself as the work of Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana Vyāsa, who appears in it as author, narrator and character. Philology regards it as a collective work: growth over several centuries between the fourth century BCE and the fourth CE (Brockington), or written composition in the second–first centuries BCE followed by enlargements (Hiltebeitel, Fitzgerald). Vyāsa is an author figure built by the text.
