The division of the Veda into four collections (traditional attribution)

वेदविभाग (vedavibhāga)

Vyāsa y sus discípulos ven llegar a Śuka (Razmnāma)
byVyasa

According to tradition, Vyāsa divided the Veda into Ṛgveda, Yajurveda, Sāmaveda and Atharvaveda and entrusted them to Paila, Vaiśampāyana, Jaimini and Sumantu, while giving history and the Purāṇas to Lomaharṣaṇa. The Viṣṇu Purāṇa makes of this a cosmic function, repeated by twenty-eight Vyāsas in successive ages. It is not a written work but the founding act tradition ascribes to his name.

Authorship note

The Mahābhārata and the Purāṇas ascribe to Vyāsa the arrangement of the single Veda into four saṃhitās and their distribution among his disciples. Philology knows that the Vedic collections were formed separately over the first millennium BCE; the attribution is mythical.
