The first ten days of the war, with the aged Bhīṣma commanding the Kauravas. Vyāsa grants Sañjaya divine sight to narrate the battle to the blind king, and before the first combat Kṛṣṇa instructs Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gītā (chaps. 23–40 of the critical edition). It ends with Bhīṣma felled onto a bed of arrows.
