The teaching of the universal ātman (vaiśvānara-vidyā), before Aśvapati Kaikeya
वैश्वानरविद्या (Chāndogya 5.11–24)

Five great householders come to Uddālaka to learn what the ātman is and what brahman is; he doubts he can answer them and takes them to King Aśvapati, who asks each what he venerates as the ātman. Uddālaka answers: the earth. The king explains that each knows only one part — heaven, the sun, the wind, space, water, earth — of the universal ātman, and that whoever knows it whole "eats food in all worlds".
