Together with the Bṛhadāraṇyaka, the oldest of the Upaniṣads. Its first books interpret the chants (sāman) and the syllable Om; the following ones contain teachings on the ātman and brahman attributed to various masters. In book 5 Uddālaka receives from King Pravāhaṇa the doctrine of the five fires and the two paths of the dead, and accompanies other brahmins to Aśvapati Kaikeya to learn the universal ātman (vaiśvānara).
