Āruṇi Upaniṣad (Āruṇeyī Upaniṣad)
आरुण्युपनिषद् / आरुणेय्युपनिषद् (Āruṇi Upaniṣad)

A short prose text in which Prajāpati explains to Āruṇi that the renouncer must give up the sacred thread, the ritual fires and the recitation of the Vedas, except for the Āraṇyaka and the Upaniṣads, and live on alms, without a home, meditating on the ātman. It is an early source for the rules of saṃnyāsa.

Authorship note
A late Upaniṣad of renunciation, assigned to the Sāmaveda, named after the sage: in it Āruṇi asks Prajāpati how to give up rituals. It is not his work. Sprockhoff and Olivelle count it among the oldest of the saṃnyāsa group, without a precise date.
