The Book of the Foundations

Libro de las fundaciones

Retrato de Santa Teresa de Jesús por fray Juan de la Miseria (1576)
byTeresa of Ávila

A chronicle of the foundations from Medina to Burgos, with portraits of nuns, benefactors and adversaries, negotiations over houses and incomes, journeys by cart and episodes of humour. It interleaves doctrinal chapters on obedience, melancholy in convents and the discernment of revelations. It is the principal source for the history of the Teresian reform and a first-rate document of urban and ecclesiastical life in Philip II's Castile. It contains the phrase about the Lord who 'walks among the pots and pans' (5,8).
