An account of the 1903 journey through Russia's ancient towns, published with the author's drawings in the annual report of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. It denounces the neglect and poor restoration of churches and fortresses and is the first manifesto of his campaign for the protection of monuments, the distant origin of the Pact.
