The Rite of Spring (scenario)
Весна священная: картины языческой Руси

A two-part scenario—'The Adoration of the Earth' and 'The Sacrifice'—imagining a spring rite of pagan Russia that culminates in a chosen maiden dancing herself to death. Roerich contributed his archaeological and ethnographic knowledge of early Rus and first proposed the title 'The Great Sacrifice'. The Paris premiere on 29 May 1913 provoked one of the most famous scandals in the history of music.
