Tattva Samāsa

तत्त्वसमास (तत्त्वसमाससूत्र)

Kapila, sabio védico (pintura de la Company School)
byKapila

A very brief list of some twenty-two to twenty-five statements that enumerates, without argument, the categories of the system: the eight “producers” (nature, intellect, the sense of self and the five subtle elements), the sixteen modifications, puruṣa, the three qualities, the processes of manifestation and dissolution, the dispositions of the intellect, the forms of error and of perfection, and liberation. It works as a mnemonic index of the doctrine, and its meaning depends entirely on the accompanying commentary.

Authorship note

Ascribed by tradition to Kapila and transmitted with the Kramadīpikā commentary. Max Müller believed it the oldest text of Sāṃkhya; later scholarship regards it as late in its present form, with no secure date.
