Sāṃkhya Sūtra (Sāṃkhya-pravacana Sūtra)
सांख्यसूत्र (साङ्ख्यप्रवचनसूत्र)

Some five hundred aphorisms (527 in the Wikisource numbering; editions vary by one or two) in six books: the first sets out the doctrine and the theory of knowledge, the second and third the evolution of nature and the means of liberation, the fourth a series of illustrative parables, the fifth refutes rival schools and the sixth recapitulates. It defends the dualism of puruṣa and prakṛti, the pre-existence of the effect in its cause and the impossibility of proving the existence of a Lord (I.92). It was commented on by Aniruddha (c. 1500), Vijñānabhikṣu (second half of the 16th century), who read it in a theistic and Vedāntic key, and Mahādeva Vedāntin.

Authorship note
Tradition calls them the “sūtras of Kapila”. Scholars (Garbe; Larson and Bhattacharya) date them to around the 14th–15th centuries: Mādhava, in the 14th century, does not know them and expounds Sāṃkhya from the Kārikā. They are not Kapila’s work.
