Vatican Sayings
Ἐπικούρου προσφώνησις (Gnomologium Vaticanum Epicureum)
A collection of moral maxims at times more poetic and personal in tone than the Principal Doctrines. They include the most quoted sayings on friendship—"friendship dances around the world", calling everyone to wake to happiness—on gratitude for past goods, the simplicity of what is necessary, independence from fame and politics, and preparation for death. Together with the Principal Doctrines, it was the school's instrument for memorisation.

Authorship note
An ancient compilation of 81 sayings preserved in a fourteenth-century codex of the Vatican Library (Vaticanus graecus 1950), discovered and published by Karl Wotke in 1888. Some coincide with the Principal Doctrines; others come from Metrodorus, Hermarchus or other Epicureans, so not all are by Epicurus.
