Principal Doctrines (Kyriai Doxai)

Κύριαι δόξαι

Cabeza de Epicuro (Metropolitan Museum)
byEpicurus

The forty maxims condense the system into short formulas meant to be learned by heart. The first four contain the so-called "fourfold remedy": the blessed and immortal being neither has troubles nor causes them; death is nothing to us; the limit of pleasure is the removal of all pain; intense pain is brief and prolonged pain is bearable. Then come maxims on prudence and justice, on desires, on the security friendship brings and, at the end, a theory of justice as a compact neither to harm nor be harmed.

Authorship note

A collection of forty sayings that Diogenes Laertius copies at the end of Book X (139–154) and lists among Epicurus' works. According to Konstan, they were excerpted from his writings or, in some cases, from those of his closest associates, to make them easy to memorise.
