On Virtue

Περὶ ἀρετῆς

Mosaico de Diógenes (Colonia)
byDiogenes of Sinope

A title in Sotion's list. Virtue, for the Cynic tradition, is reached by training rather than study, and suffices for happiness; Cynicism was, in a formula recorded by Diogenes Laertius (VI 104), "a short cut to virtue". Nothing of the work survives.

Authorship note

Lost work. It appears only in the list of Sotion (Book VII of his Succession of Philosophers), who according to Diogenes Laertius (VI 80) held only these titles to be genuine; Sosicrates and Satyrus denied that Diogenes wrote anything.
