The short Dunhuang recension of the Bodhicaryāvatāra

byang chub sems dpa'i spyod pa la 'jug pa (recensión de Dunhuang, IOL Tib J 628 + Pelliot tibétain 794; IOL Tib J 629; IOL Tib J 630)

Śāntideva, pintura del siglo XIX
byŚāntideva

Some 700 stanzas in nine chapters: the second and third chapters of the canonical version form a single one, and many verses of the meditation and wisdom chapters are missing, including those refuting Īśvara and Sāṃkhya. Akira Saito, who studied it in the 1990s, considers it earlier than the long version, which would be an enlargement; the Tibetan catalogue Ldan dkar ma (early ninth century) records a length that fits it.

Authorship note

Late eighth-century Tibetan translation (Sarvajñādeva and Paltseg) of a shorter Sanskrit version now lost in Sanskrit. The colophon of IOL Tib J 629 attributes it to Akṣayamati, whom sources cited by Saito regard as another name of Śāntideva; Butön already knew that the nine-chapter version was attributed to Akṣayamati.
