Śāntideva, pintura del siglo XIX
byŚāntideva

An anthology of sūtra passages attributed by tradition to Śāntideva and lost in every language. It is known only from the poem's own mention and from the hagiographic tale of the three books found in the vanished monk's cell. Its existence as a work distinct from Nāgārjuna's is debated.

Authorship note

In Bodhicaryāvatāra 5.105–106 the author recommends reading the Śikṣāsamuccaya and a Sūtrasamuccaya, and also mentions Nāgārjuna's. Hagiography (Butön, Tāranātha) says Śāntideva left a Sūtrasamuccaya of his own in his cell; it has not survived. It must not be confused with the Sūtrasamuccaya attributed to Nāgārjuna, which does survive in Tibetan and Chinese (Taishō 1635).
