Смерть Ивана Ильича

Leo Tolstoy

Novella about a provincial judge who has lived a correct, comfortable and empty life and who, after a trivial fall, falls incurably ill. Surrounded by the lies of his family and doctors, only the peasant servant Gerasim offers him true compassion. In his agony he discovers that his life "was not the right thing", and at the last moment death turns into light. His first major fiction after the religious crisis; published in 1886.
