Rabi'a the Mystic and Her Fellow-Saints in Islam (Margaret Smith)

Rabia de Basora y su sirvienta en oración
byRabia al-Adawiyya

It collects and translates the stories and sayings attributed to Rabia in Arabic and Persian sources, from the Sufi manuals to Attar, and places them in the context of Basran asceticism and of other women saints of Islam. For ninety years it was the obligatory reference; Cornell (2019) has revised its tendency to accept late stories as historical.

Authorship note

Monograph by Margaret Smith (1884–1970), the first devoted to Rabia in a Western language. It is not a work by Rabia. It fixed the dates 717–801 and much of the hagiographic image in the West.
