Ascetic Sayings Transmitted with Chains (Ibn Abi l-Dunya, al-Dhahabi)
أخبار رابعة في كتب الزهد (Ibn Abi l-Dunya; al-Dhahabi, Siyar)

A handful of brief scenes: Rabia keeping vigil through the night and reproaching herself for sleep at dawn, correcting Sufyan al-Thawri when he boasts of sorrow, shutting her door to those who talk of the world, preferring a visitor's conversation to the rice pot. They present a severe and lucid ascetic, of recognised authority among the traditionists, without the amorous rhetoric of the later tradition.

Authorship note
The oldest and soberest layer of her memory: scenes and sayings transmitted with a chain of witnesses (her servant Abda, Ja'far ibn Sulayman, Riyah al-Qaysi) by Ibn Abi l-Dunya (d. 894) and collected by al-Dhahabi (d. 1348). Their historicity is greater than Attar's, but they remain transmission, not her own writing.
