Mahābhāṣya (The Great Commentary)

व्याकरणमहाभाष्य (Vyākaraṇa-Mahābhāṣya)

Patañjali como encarnación de Ādiśeṣa (imagen de culto)
byPatañjali

A commentary in dialogic prose on Pāṇini's grammar (Aṣṭādhyāyī) and on Kātyāyana's critical remarks. It discusses the aims of grammatical study, the eternity of the word, the relation between word and meaning and the notion of sphoṭa, and defends or corrects hundreds of rules. Its examples are a historical source on Śuṅga India. It was the supreme authority of Sanskrit grammar, commented on by Bhartṛhari, Kaiyaṭa and Nāgeśa.

Authorship note

Undisputed work of the grammarian Patañjali (mid-2nd century BCE). It is recorded as attributed in this entry because its author is, for most scholars (Woods, Renou, White), a different person from the yoga Patañjali; their identity is traditional and was defended by Dasgupta and some Indian authors.
