Marcus Aurelius
Edict to the Assembly of Asia
Traditional attribution
Edict to the Assembly of Asia

A rescript addressed to the provincial assembly of Asia forbidding Christians to be accused for their name alone and praising their piety in the face of earthquakes. It is also transmitted as an appendix to Justin's First Apology and is a key document for studying how Christian tradition built the image of favourable emperors.

Authorship note
Of very doubtful authenticity. Eusebius (Ecclesiastical History IV.13) places it in the reign of Antoninus Pius, but the transmitted heading names Marcus Aurelius Antoninus; most scholars regard it as a Christian forgery or reworking.
