The Golden Book of Marcus Aurelius

Libro áureo de Marco Aurelio

Busto de Marco Aurelio (Louvre, MR 561)
byMarcus Aurelius

A fictionalised life and invented letters of a wise and eloquent Marcus Aurelius, published in 1528 and recast in the Relox de príncipes (1529). It was one of the most translated books of sixteenth-century Europe—into French, Italian and English, by Lord Berners as The Golden Boke of Marcus Aurelius (1535)—and spread the image of the philosopher emperor before the Meditations became known. The Real Academia Española has published it in a critical edition by Emilio Blanco.

Authorship note

A pseudepigraphic fiction by Fray Antonio de Guevara, who presented it as the translation of an ancient manuscript of the emperor's letters and life. It contains nothing authentic by Marcus Aurelius; it is recorded because of its enormous circulation.
