Letter to the Athenians

Ἐπιστολὴ Μάρκου Αὐρηλίου πρὸς Ἀθηναίους

Busto de Marco Aurelio (Louvre, MR 561)
byMarcus Aurelius

A long epigraphic letter of the mid-170s in which Marcus settles petitions and appeals from the Athenians concerning access to the Areopagus, the council and other magistracies, and disputes involving Herodes Atticus. It is the main direct evidence of his cultural policy in Greece, contemporary with the chairs of philosophy he endowed at Athens. James H. Oliver edited it with a commentary in 1970.

Authorship note

An official document preserved in an inscription from Athens; like all imperial letters it was drafted by the chancery, though it expresses the emperor's decisions. Some passages are also attributed to Commodus, associated in power.
