Hafez
Rubaiyat (attributed quatrains)
Traditional attribution
Rubaiyat (attributed quatrains)
رباعیات (Roba'iyat)

Quatrains on themes of wisdom, love and wine, the short form par excellence of Persian poetry. Unlike the secure ghazals, Hafez's corpus of rubaiyat is unstable: it grows and shrinks from one manuscript to another and shares pieces with the floating repertoire of quatrains also ascribed to Khayyam and others. They found favour in the West through versions such as that of Syed Abdul Majid and L. Cranmer-Byng (1910).

Authorship note
The Qazvini-Ghani edition contains 42 quatrains and Hammer-Purgstall translated 72, but most also circulate under other poets' names and their attribution to Hafez is weak; the Gorakhpur anthology of 824/1421 includes only 26. They are recorded as an attributed work.
