Japji (Japu)

Guru Nanak

It opens the Guru Granth Sahib with the Mul Mantar, the definition of God in one line, followed by thirty-eight stanzas (pauris) and a final salok. It traverses the impossibility of reaching God through ritual purity, silence or learning; obedience to the divine will (hukam); the power of hearing and accepting the Name; the immensity of creation, and the five realms of spiritual ascent up to the "realm of truth". Sikhs recite it every morning. The final salok recurs almost identically in a var by Guru Angad, so some attribute it to the second guru.
