A portrait of Ramakrishna as a living synthesis of religions and as India's answer to modern materialism. Vivekananda avoids the miraculous episodes here and stresses his master's purity, renunciation and universality; it is the main source of the image of Ramakrishna that circulated in the West before the translation of the Kathamrita.
