On Life

Leo Tolstoy

Philosophical treatise of 1886–1887 in which Tolstoy defines true life as the submission of animal individuality to rational consciousness, whose essence is love. He holds that the fear of death arises from confusing life with bodily existence. Banned by the censor, it first appeared in French translation (1889).
