The tradition’s great biography: childhood in Kamarpukur, the years of longing at Dakshineswar, the successive disciplines—Tantra with the Bhairavi Brahmani, Vaishnava devotion, Advaita with Totapuri, Islam and Christianity—, the relationship with Sarada Devi and the arrival of the disciples. Saradananda writes as theologian as well as witness and devotes chapters to explaining the master as a divine incarnation, but his information on the years before 1879, which he did not witness, comes from what Ramakrishna and others told him. Translated into English by Swami Jagadananda (1952) and again by Swami Chetanananda (2003).

Authorship note

Biography written by Swami Saradananda (1865–1927), a direct disciple, between 1909 and 1919, in five parts, to repay the debt on the Udbodhan house built for Sarada Devi. It is not Ramakrishna’s work, but it gathers many accounts he gave of his own life and is, with the Kathamrita, the source of almost everything told of his years of sadhana. It mixes testimony, oral memory and theological interpretation (Ramakrishna as avatar).
