Râmakrishna: His Life and Sayings

Ramakrishna sentado, la fotografía más difundida

Müller expands his article “A Real Mahatman” (The Nineteenth Century, August 1896) with a biography, a critical assessment—he warns that Vivekananda’s account is not free of traditional elements and discusses Mozoomdar’s judgement—and a long series of sayings and parables: the water called by many names, the chameleon, the blind men and the elephant, the salt doll, the lamp without oil. It is the channel through which many of Ramakrishna’s images entered European culture.

Authorship note

Book by Friedrich Max Müller (1823–1900). The biographical part rests on the account Vivekananda sent him; the 395 numbered sayings were supplied by Ramakrishna’s disciples and the editor of the Brahmavadin, from earlier Bengali collections. It is the first collection of sayings published in Europe.
