Yogabhāṣya (Commentary on the Yoga)
योगभाष्य (Yogabhāṣya, también Vyāsabhāṣya)

The prose commentary that accompanies the aphorisms in all manuscripts and without which many of them are unintelligible. It develops the psychology of mental states and latent impressions, quotes earlier masters of Sāṃkhya and yoga such as Pañcaśikha and Jaigīṣavya, and argues with the Buddhist schools. All later exegesis —Vācaspati Miśra, the Vivaraṇa, Vijñānabhikṣu— in fact comments on the combined aphorisms and commentary.

Authorship note
Tradition ascribes it to Vyāsa, the name of the legendary compiler of the Vedas; Woods (1914) dated it between 650 and 850. Bronkhorst (1984) and Maas (2006, 2013) argue that the commentary is by Patañjali himself and that sūtra and bhāṣya form a single work, the Pātañjalayogaśāstra, as the colophons say. Others (Bryant) keep the traditional distinction.
