Way of Opinion (B8.50–B19)

Δόξα (DK 28 B8.50–B19)

Cabeza identificada con Parménides (Velia)
byParmenides

An exposition of the "deceptive order" of mortal opinions: the world built from two forms, light and night; the celestial rings; a divinity who governs all and creates Eros; the moon shining with borrowed light and always looking towards the sun; the generation of the sexes and a theory of thought according to the mixture of the limbs. Its relation to the way of truth—a rival cosmology to be refuted, the best possible account of the apparent world, or a doctrine of his own—is one of the great problems of interpretation.

Authorship note

An authentic part of the poem, very fragmentary. B17 and B18 survive in paraphrase or Latin translation (Caelius Aurelianus), and their placement and scope are debated.
