ديوان الحلاج (Diwan al-Hallaj)

La ejecución de al-Hallaj (1602)
byAl-Hallaj

Some seventy short poems, often of only a few lines, in which love of God is spoken in the language of union: "I am He whom I love, and He whom I love is I", "Your spirit is mingled with mine as wine with pure water". The famous "Kill me, my trusted friends, for in my killing is my life" turns execution into a passage to true life. They are verses of great economy, with paradoxes and plays on pronouns that show the dissolution of the self, and they formed the core of al-Hallaj's image as a martyr of love.

Authorship note

A collection of poems and fragments attributed to al-Hallaj, assembled by Massignon (Journal asiatique, 1931) from quotations scattered in Sufi works, chronicles and anthologies; Kamil Mustafa al-Shaybi's enlarged edition (1974) adds pieces of doubtful attribution. Part of the verses also circulates under other names.
