«"Though my life come to its end and I return to the Pure Land, I shall come back again and again like the waves of Waka bay. When you are alone and rejoice, think that there are two; when you are two and rejoice, think that there are three: that other one is Shinran."»

This is the so-called Gorinmatsu no gosho ("Deathbed Writing"), dated the 11th month of 1262 and signed "Gutoku Shinran, fully ninety years old". Widespread in popular piety, scholarship regards it as apocryphal: it appears neither in the early collections of his writings nor in Kakunyo's biography. It was transmitted in later compilations, such as Shimaji Daitō's Seiten (1928).
