Republic (Politeia)
Πολιτεία

Zeno's most famous work, written in his youth while he still followed Crates. According to the critics cited by Diogenes Laertius (VII 32–33), it declared ordinary education useless, called those who are not virtuous enemies and strangers to one another and reserved for the good the status of citizens, friends and free men; it established community of wives, forbade building temples, law courts and gymnasia, dispensed with coinage and ordered men and women to dress alike. Plutarch sums it up as the project of a single way of life and a single order for all men, like a herd under a common law. It is the founding text of Stoic cosmopolitanism.

Authorship note
A lost work, known from testimonies and fragments collected in SVF I. Its authenticity was questioned by some Stoics embarrassed by its content; Chrysippus, in his On the Republic, defended it as Zeno's (Diogenes Laertius VII 34), and Philodemus discusses the matter in On the Stoics. Modern scholarship regards it as genuine.
