The Mass on the World
La Messe sur le Monde
A prayer in the form of a cosmic Mass: with neither bread, wine nor altar, the priest offers 'on the altar of the whole Earth' the labour and suffering of the world, and asks that the consecration reach the entire universe. Its parts —the offering, fire over the world, fire in the world, communion, prayer— distil his mysticism of matter and his intuition of the cosmic Christ.

Authorship note
Written in the Ordos desert in 1923, developing an earlier text of 1918 ('Le Prêtre'); published in Hymne de l'Univers (Seuil, 1961) and collected in Le Cœur de la Matière.
